INTRODUCING >>>>

Postby Clarkey » Tue Feb 26, 2008 8:31 pm

I've been thinking that it can be hard for a new member to get around the forum to understand how our little community fits together and what makes us all tick.

So I propose (and am looking for others to help support) that this thread be a bit of a 'members directory' with room for a bit more detail than what goes into the profile.

Something along the lines of:

What's your running history?

I always ran in school once I learned as an 8 yr old, that I was not too bad. Then didn't run for runnings sake again till 2004 (10yrs later). I've been reasonably consistent since then.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

Originally it would have been anything around 10-15km, but now I am enjoying being out for much longer. Current proudest moments have come from marathons.

Why do you run?

Mainly to keep the weight in check and to keep fit. But the competitive instincts mean I love to push for better results in races and training.

There is also the social side which is an added bonus.

How did you find the forum?

I saw it advertised either in Runners World or on an event flyer (can't recall exactly), and have been making a pest of myself ever since.....

What's your number 1 running goal?

To run the perfect race for me, to know that at the end of the event I got the most out of my potential on that day. My record so far indicates I have a lot to learn before getting to this point.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

4-5 days running, training from 4.10m/k - 6m/k. Racing 4m/k to 6m/k+ (in the hills)

So now its over to you - long time member or brand new or long time lurker.... give us a snapshot.

Feel free to use the above as a guide, or create your own introduction.

Of course - any Q & A is most welcome and encouraged.
42.2km is just the warm-up

Running history.

I have memories of running in the bush when I was very young. Started to run "training runs" after meeting the famous ultra runner Tony Rafferty when I was in maybe 6th grade or thereabouts. Ran my first marathon in 1979. I joined a running club in 1980 and trained pretty seriously for a number of years. I intend to keep running for as long as my legs allow.

Favourite distance/discipline.

I've always enjoyed off road running, particularly mountain running. I used to do best in off road/mountain marathon events but have struggled to get the training in for these the last few years. In recent years I've been enjoying our local 5-10km trail/forest events.

Why do I run?

Because I love running.

How did I find the forum?

I was a regular on Cool Running and came across a reference to it on a thread. Checked it out, registered then forgot about it for a time. Checked it out again months later and started posting regularly.

Number 1 running goal.

No particular major goals, I just want to keep running particularly through areas of natural beauty.

My training schedule right now.

Today was weights in the morning and a hilly 10k forest run in the evening. Yesterday I did a 3hr mountain bike ride through farmland and forests. The rest of this week will be a mix of runs of about 10k and at least one more long ride. Also some weight training. I've been injured so won't be doing any longer runs for a few weeks. Current running pace is about 5mins per km. on my steady training runs.

What's your running history?

I hit 110kg back in late 2005 and joined a gym to lose weight. in 2006 Lost about 23kg but put 6 back on over xmas. I took up running in Jan 2007 for fitness and to lose weight. Now my weight is steady at 80 to 81kg.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

10km would be my favourite distance. I enjoy a 1/2 marathon as well. And anything in between. At the moment mainly road but I want to do more trail running.

Why do you run?

Fitness, social, weight-and to prove that I'm not quite the useless sportsman I am generally percieved to be!

How did you find the forum?

Cross reference from coolrunning. I now post regularly on both forums

What's your number 1 running goal?

Hard one to answer-I have a few goals. Main ones are sub 43 minute 10km and to finish a marathon.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Pretty average actually! normally 2 midweek runs of 5 to 10km (usually 10) and a weekend long run of 20 to 30km. I might do more or less depending on how I pull up from my long run. Pace is about 5:15 for a 10km training run to about 5:35 for a long run

What's your running history?

Weight loss. Grown up being the 'fat kid' and school and only got worse doing a computer science degree with 0 exercise. Hit 120kg and the doctor freaked with my health at 20yrs old. Hit the gym and ran at night (so no one would see me). Over the next year kept on improving then another runner saw me pull out a 45min 10km on the treadmill and told me to enter a fun run. Entered the Run to the G and got hooked.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

Until recently it was the 5km and 10km. But as of late last year it's more the longer distance trail runs I've started to like.

Why do you run?

Mostly now it's for stress relief and I feel sort of free when running. Also to keep my health and weight in order. Also to better my own times.

How did you find the forum?

I seriously can't remember

What's your number 1 running goal?

To stay injury free which is easier said than done. As long as I'm running I'm happy. A bonus is when I'm able to train hard to improve my times.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Running- Catch me Tues at the Tan for a lap av 4min/k, Wed longer easy 10-12km, Thur is speed/hill, Sat easy run around Lysterfield/Churchill, Sun longer 20-30km run at around 5min/k.

X-Train- Weights 1 or 2 times a week, bike when I have time, try to get a class in at the gym once a week.

What's your running history?

I played football through till my mid twenties, and after retiring didn't do much structured exercise except for touch football over summer. Began running in earnest in the early 00's and got fit enough to do an 88minute half. Then decided to do a marathon, which I was under prepared for and this knocked me about for quite a bit. Got back into running again in about 2005 and have enjoyed it immensely.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I love the half marathon. It's an effort to prepare and the hurt is a good hurt! Also has a great sense of achievement associated every one that is completed.

Why do you run?

Initially it was so I could still eat whatever I want without turning into a hippopotamus, however now the stress release and social aspect are almost as important.

How did you find the forum?

Saw it advertised in Runner's World.

What's your number 1 running goal?

To enjoy my running and to enjoy running with others.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

3 - 4 days per week with runs ranging between 5 and 15km generally.
Running just as fast as we can, holding on to one another's hand....

What's your running history?

I enjoyed XC at high school; both of my high schools were more academically focussed so sport was not pursued heavily. I do remember generally finishing at the pointy end of our 3km jaunts, the schools I went to had lovely bushy grounds so we did real XC. After school I went all goth and did zip as far as running was concerned until I rediscovered it in my early 30s and like any born again quickly become a zealot.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

Happy to give anything over 1500 metres a go, I suck at the short stuff and won't bang my head against the wall trying to get any better, you have to play to your strengths, I am built for distance, not speed.

I particularly enjoy XC, especially if it is muddy and wet (does not happen much these days sadly) because it feels more primal. Though I also love a good road race, once I hit that nice smooth bitumen road I feel so damn fast.

Training for Trailwalker has given me a renewed appreciation for trails and the exhiliration of the great outdoors and once TW is over I have a heap of new trails to re-visit for long runs over the winter.

Why do you run?

Abject terror at the thought of regaining the 16Kgs I fought so hard to loose. But more seriously for the challenge, to get out of my comfort zone and for how good it makes me feel, even when it hurts :-)

How did you find the forum?

I was entering my first fun run (2005 - Queen of the Lake 5km - still remember my time it was 25:56, a training run these days) and had a peek at the forum, I didn't sign up for a couple of months though. That is typical of me, hang about on the fringes and get the lay of the land before jumping in.

What's your number 1 running goal?

Apart from the myriad time goals I have my bigegst goal is to run the Commrades Ultra in South Africa, of course I have to get the 42.2km out of the way first. This is not just some blind goal to run an Ultra, there is a special reason behind this one in particular.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

2008 has started really well for me (knocking on wood like crazy right now) and I have found my "easy" training pace has started to come down to the low 5s, a pace I used to race at.

I am ying to Clarkey's yang when it comes to training  it is all about planning and order for me, but this is part of the fun, I love detail and am very analytical. I have spent hours reading books, magazines and internet articles and talking to more experienced runners. I have assimilated reams of information and somehow manage to filter it down to what works for me. I enjoy the process as much as the end result.

Great idea for a thread Clarkey........

What's your running history?

In early 2006, after a few years of behaving like a sloth, I found that my weight had ballooned out to an incredibly unhealthy 130kg. I bit the bullet and started the CSIRO diet which helped me drop about 15 kgs, at which point my many hours walking were gradually converted into running. I began running regularly in Sep 2006 and have since managed to get down to a more respectable 90ish kgs.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I haven't done a lot a lot of events since I started but those I have done were all 10k - HM. I generally prefer the longer events as speed isn't exactly my forte.

Why do you run?

It makes me feel good about myself. I love the feeling I get after a good, solid early morning run, knowing that no matter what happens that day, I've achieved something positive already. I also love my cooking (and eating, obviously) so running is a great way to keep my weight down whilst still enjoying the good things in life.

I'm only just beginning to become a 'social runner' and am starting to see what all the fuss is about.

How did you find the forum?

Google.

What's your number 1 running goal?

To complete a marathon in a respectable time. I know what that time is and I know what I'm capable of (at the moment) and after receiving some extremely helpful advice on this forum, have decided I'm, not going to run a marathon until that time is achievable. Fingers crossed it will be at this years Melbourne Marathon.

Longer term, I'd love to compete in one of the major overseas marathons like Boston, London or New York.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

I generally do 4-5 sessions a week including a speed session, tempo session (slightly sub 5min/k), long run (5:10-5:45) and easy runs (5:45-6). I also do 3-4 weight sessions a week and have recently dusted the cobwebs off my bike and hit the road once a week for some cross-training.
I'm not a complete idiot..... some parts are just missing

What's your running history?

I didn't start running until about 1995 when I joined a gym and started using the treadmill. Previously I was very much into Netball and also doing aerobic/step/spin classes and weights.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

Can't really say that I have a favourite distance. I've done everything from 4km runs up to 1/2 marathons. I thoroughly enjoyed the 4km Spring into Shape run that I did last year though.

Why do you run?

I run mainly to help maintain my weight, but I absolutely love the social aspect of running. That's how I met my bestest buddy Duckgirl and all my other wonderful running friends :D

How did you find the forum?

If I remember rightly I googled something like "Running Forum"

What's your number 1 running goal?

Currently my number 1 goal is to be fit enough to complete my first marathon in July without falling in a big heap at the end and vowing never to do another one.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Training schedule in one word - BUSY  Not sure about pace as it varies depending on what I'm doing.

What a great topic :D

What's your running history?

Before a couple of years ago, I'd never run EVER (well there were a couple of occasions that had free beer involved...) I was diagnosed with type II diabetes plus uber high colesterol and realised I needed to do something about it. Started off losing weight and walking, but the walking got too slow.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I don't know that I have one. I seem to do a lot of 8 km runs but that's prolly cos there's lots of those around.

Why do you run?

Weight loss... ha ha ha... that's working really well for me. I just keep setting wacky goals then needing to train so I don't make a total idiot of myself (that's not working real well either).

How did you find the forum?

Can't remember but I lurked for ages cos I was too scared to post anything!

What's your number 1 running goal?

To start upright and injury-free.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Slow and unsteady. Frustratingly so.

What's your running history?

From about 15 years old I swapped sports of all varieties for the dubious pleasures of guitars, tobacco, alcohol and... (this is a family forum, so I'll stop there). In mid-twenties, during a fiscally-challenged period during which I couldn't afford a car, I started riding bikes everywhere. Amazingly, it wasn't torture.

Bike riding led to lycra/road biking, which led to running as cross training.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I don't do track stuff, and I don't do "short and fast" at all well. Basically I stick to 10km and up. Last year was all about the marathon and I enjoyed the Melbourne Marathon a lot. On the whole though, the half marathon is my favourite distance. It's definitely a distance run but you can run it every week without tapering and long recoveries.

Why do you run?

Initially it was all about the challenge, seeing whether I could manage 5km, then 10km, then 20km etc.

Now it's definitely a huge part of my life. Despite what most people assume, it's the easiest, most peaceful part of my day. All I have to worry about is putting one foot in front of the other and repeating, getting to the top of the hill or around the corner. Running is about the most simple and elemental thing a person can do.

It's also a great way to start the day, a great way to end it, and a great way to break up a long boring day at work.

I don't worry about gaining or losing weight. The way I think about it: if my body is capable of running 60km a week, it's in pretty good shape. I don't much care what the scales say.

How did you find the forum?

Google, some time ago. I lurked for a while, then logged on and started asking slightly panicky questions two weeks out from my first full marathon. I look at Cool Running every now and then, but don't post often.

What's your number 1 running goal?

It was running a marathon, then running one under 3 hours. I don't have a single goal at the moment. There are plenty of runs I'd like to do.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Between 60km and 80km per week. A long run on Sunday - around 25km or so - and I try to make this at 4:30 minute/km pace depending on the terrain and/or weather. 3 or 4 runs during the week including a mixture of hill reps, fartlek, tempo and just general exploration runs. The tempo runs should be around 4:00 minute/km, the easier ones can be around 5.

Running background

I've always played some sort of sport, a lot of footy and cricket, dabbled a bit in tennis, even badminton a couple of times.

Running was never a sport of its own though. It was always part of something else, like chasing a ball.

If I could be bothered I would turn up for school sports, and cross country, and while I was good enough to run for the school, never progressed very far. (Maybe I didn't have that school spirit).

I got into running through my kids. They all do/did Little A's, and one year they decided to give the cross country season a go. I noticed a lot of the mums and dads running as well, with all the dads picking the "long" race of 3kms. So how hard could that be? Hmmm... famous last words. 3km in 18.04.99 - gotta be happy with that.

So once a week in the winter, I would turn up and run 3kms, and that was all I would do.

After a couple of seasons of that, one of the other dads approached me and said we should maybe do some training over the summer so we could get/stay fit. Foolishly I agreed. Then he said there was a fun run coming up "only 8kms" he said. So with great trepidation, I stepped up to the line, and amazed myself finishing in 45.10.

I gradually then built up until I reached where I am today.

Favourite distances

I don't really have one. I have raced evrything from 50m sprints to marathons. I really enjoy the longer runs, 10kms to HM if I had to pick, but really I just want to be out there running.

For example a couple of weeks back, I had a track meet (Shield Final) where I ran 3000m, 100m, 400m, 110mH, and a leg of the relay (plus a couple of field events). That was on the Saturday - on the Sunday I was at Maroondah Dam for the 30km mountain trail run, and on the Tuesday I was back at the track running a 1500m. If I specialised I may get a lot better at one discipline - but I just want to run and don't care about the distance.

Why do I run

Initially to get and stay fit, now - because I can.

No.1 goal

I don't have anything specific at the moment. I do want a good winter season, and I'll work hard to see what happens there. I suppose I would also like to run a good marathon, but honestly, I know I won't put in the right sort of training, so I'll just take what I get (and try not to be too disappointed).

How did I find the forum

I think I was looking at the Ausrun sight, checking out upcoming fun runs, when I sort of fell over it. I lurked for a few weeks, but when discussions started about the Puffing Billy race, I sort of got all excited, and jumped in.

Training schedule and pace

I would run most days. Sundays is normally the long run, easy pace maybe 5min pace or so. Monday normally an easy 10kms. Tues - normally a masters meet. I run hard in the sprints, (pretending it's real speed work), and then run a tempo run in the long event (3km - 8km).

Wednesday, a longish run, 12 -18kms depending on time and where I am.

Thursday - usually a day off. Friday - a sharp 5 -8kms, and most saturdays I compete.

(and then some weeks life gets in the way and my running looks nothing like that).

I'll probably keep running for quite a while. I enjoy being out there, and I've made some really good friends - so why would I stop.

Thanks everyone.

What's your running history?

I have always enjoyed running as well as tennis, netball and cycling- but running helped me mend my broken heart when my boyfriend dumped me in year 8 and I have used it to escape ever since. (And if you are reading this Ron, I forgive you)

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I love 1/2 marathon distance- I have only done 3 but even the one I hated I loved. I love to cycle as well but I can't relax and zone out like I can when I run.

Why do you run?

Chips, must burn off chips.

How did you find the forum?

Superjacent introduced me to it at work one day (and my productivity has never been the same)

What's your number 1 running goal?

To run Half Marathons in a time that I don't have to be embarrassed about.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Still building back from injury- currently 3 runs a week, plus 1hr cycle 5 days and a few swims if I can't weasel my way out of them.

Really great idea Clarkey :D

Whats your running history?

I always enjoyed running races and relays at school but as I got older always played team sports, netball and hockey. It was a bit harder to commit to team sports when I started nursing with the shift work which led me to the gym.

It wasn't until 2006 when RJ's personal trainer wanted her to do a Tan trial and she asked me to do it with her. We did the walk run thing and then we started entering Fun Runs. To be quite honest before that I had never really considered "just running" but I have never looked back. When I am on a roll I love it!!

Favorite distances and/or disciplines

I have done and enjoy 4,5,8 and 10 km races. Probably have to say at this stage 8 and 10km are my favourites.

Why do you run?

Have to say this is a very good question and often wonder why myself as it is always not so easy with my pesky family

I would have loved to been to able to say for weight loss but thats just not happening at the moment  So, I run because of the feeling I get when running, thats if I am not carking it  , and especially the feeling of achievement when completed. I always feel better in myself when I run regularly.

It has also been an added bonus to have met other ausrunners. A bunch of happy, positive people who always give motivation and encouragement. Love it :D

How did you find the forum?

I found the website in the Runners World magazine. I have know idea how I discovered mag, I am thinking it must have been a flyer in one of the Fun Run show bags :D

Whats your number 1 running goal?

To run my first Half Marathon this year, probably at the Melbourne Marathon.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

I have just joined the 10km Booster group at Sporting Spirit. Two sessions a week which covers strength and technique, and speed, fartlek etc. I do a "long run" on the Sunday. I am currently building up for Run 4 the Kids and will have to add another run in somewhere soon. I have also just had a Pilates program written up by Physio and will be doing that twice a week.

My pace is slow  In events it is usually around the 6:20min/km.

Whats your running history?

After the birth of my 2nd child started running to drop weight quickly to get back into netball team I was formally a member in. I remember I got on the treadmil at the gym and ran 2 minutes! I thought I was gonna die!!!I slowly built up my times to about 20 minutes in conjunction with netball, weights and step/spin classes.Dropped all my weight plus some and wouldn't you know it? decided to have another baby! Started again for same reason but this time had 24kg to lose.

My baby daughter was flown to Childrens at 6 weeks blue. She has a heart condition which makes her heart rate shoot up to 240 beats a minute. Decided to take running seriously and enter "Run For The Kids" 3.4km after spending nearly 3 weeks there.

Favorite distances and/or discilines

I've been trying to crack the 10km mark for some time. I feel quite comfortable running this distance but feel I now need to challange myself.Ran 14km last week and felt awesome.Time is a factor for me cause I have netball training 2 times a week and 2 games a week so I have no real rest days ,which I really need.

Why do you run?

I get an amazing feeling from it when I'm finished. I never thought I'd be a runner ,in fact, used to think people who run were morons  But the challenge and I'm sorry to say the"above everyone else feeling" I get is addictive. The fact it maintains my weight and I can have mud cake is an added bonus!

How did you find the forum?

Cool Running thread. Found CR through friend but never go there. find this forum much friendlier!

Whats your number 1 running goal?

Melbourne Marathon! Dont care bout time(within reason) but want to be in that minority who do a marathon and finish!

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Mon- 8km 46mins

Tues-pre season n/ball training 7-10km with hills,beep test,circuits etc.

Wed-pilates (pm) easy 5 km 28mins(am)

Thurs- 11-13km 66-74 min

Fri - netball game (med intensity)

Sat-netball game (high intensity)

Sun -long run 14km+

My pace is slow usually 6min/km I'm happy with that!

In primary school I used to win running races ten laps around the school. Without much training I went alright in my age group in the 800 metres. As a 11 year old I joined a cross country club. I was in a team that won a state relay medal. I gave sport the away during high school, something I now regret.

At age 18, I wondered how far I could take my running if I trained hard. So I started running competitively, in cross country, funs runs and on the track. I won a few more relay medals. My times continued to improve, until I injured my right knee, which basically ended my running career. I think my best performances were still ahead of me I was only 24 when I stopped.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

800 metres, I broke 2 minutes; City to Surf I ran in 48 minutes, Sutherland to Surf 35 minutes, Parramatta ten miles in 55:07. I used to enjoy running Cross Country for the Sutherland club.

Why do you run?

Because I love it. During the long years I haven't been able to run, I often have running dreams. I have had a chronic runner's knee injury since 2005. I am only starting to run again after three years of intensive physio. On the 20.07.08 I ran my first cross country race since 1985.

My goal is to win the Battle of the Maltracking patella.

How did you find the forum?

In 2005, I bought Runners World magazine. I went in the Sawtell Fun Run, my first fun run in 20 years. A link to forum was in the magazine. I also search the web for sites with advice of injuries.

What's your number 1 running goal?

I would like to be able to walk briskly without my knee taped. At the moment I am too scared to run again.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

I don't have an official schedule yet, but this week might look like:

Monday 30 minute cylce am

Tuesday 6.6km walk am; 15 minutes cycle pm

Wednesday 5.3km run am

Thursday 30 minute cycle

Friday 6.6km walk am; 15 minute cycle pm

Saturday 6km run am

Sunday 5km race

Each week day I walk 20 minutes and do stretched before and after. Every day I do at least an hours physio to strengthen my quads

What's your running history?

I have ran on and off since I was 15 when I joined the airforce and pretty consistently for the ten years i was in the RAAF. Slackened off a bit until I decided to join the Cops in 97, got fit again only to lose it when I started the shift work & takeaway food after training, got fit again for a couple of years about 2000 when I had a crack at some tri's, then slackened off again for a while during a two year stint at Aussie Rules at age 37 (bad move for the back and knees) and really got hooked again about April last year after the weight ballooned out to 105kg. Now low 90 kg's.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

No real favourite - get a buzz from a nice quick short run as much as a nice controlled long run.

Why do you run?

Fitness and to keep the weight in line, stress relief from work.

How did you find the forum?

Think I stumbled across it, lurked for a while before getting the courage to post.

What's your number 1 running goal?

In 2008 to run my first marathon in my 40th year. Run a 50 minute 10k again. Also want to complete a Half ironman Tri this year and possibly qualify for the 2009 Ironman at Port Mac - however that may take a year or three to get fit enough for (the 180k bike scares the hell out of me as well as the marathon afterwards)

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Running 4-5 days a week, pace has improved from over 6 min/k to low 5 min/k. Oh so close the other day...A little bit of biking and swimming as well - however less of this in the last few weeks as the training for the marathon has commenced in earnest.
If you can't excel with talent - triumph with effort.

2008 Goal: 5 min k's

Run consistently!

Run a marathon

Complete a half ironman tri

What's your running history?

On and off since high school in some shape or form, but not in a competitive sense until a) in my early 20's and b) in my late 20's and then c) early 30's (NOW). Gave most things a go when young, but running sort of stuck as it required a lean frame and bugger-all co-ordination, traits I still share to this day. Interruptions were basically university-based, as study and the accompanying lifestyle took hold.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

None specific, although the 3K on the track and longer stuff on the road provides me with the most satisfaction competition-wise.

Why do you run?

Because I can. It alleviates stress and provides me with my competitive outlet simultaneously, and it kind of makes you rise above the mediocrity of many of those around you, such as some of your work colleagues.

How did you find the forum?

Stumbled upon it.

What's your number 1 running goal?

I want to be the proverbial fine wine. I just want to get better with age. I want to be that guy in his 40's (or 50's) crankin' out 3:00 or better marathons whilst balancing job and family - these are the hardcore guys who deserve all the props in the world. Ideally, i'd just like consistency over time with minimal drop off. I'd also like to be a competent enough swimmer to be able to complete an Ironman distance triathlon before turning 40.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Pretty foot-to-the-floor. Whilst work has caused continuous interruption, it's pretty much something everyday, be it a run to the gym or 2.5 hours plus on a Sunday. With a half-marathon next week, run for the kids in 4 and Boston in 7, there's a mix of heavy and light weeks. In short, it's something like this at the moment:

Monday: complete rest or 6.5ks (to & from gym) + gym (incorporating 5k's of cross training or thereabouts)

Tuesday: 8-12k threshold run at 3:40-3:45 pace + w/u & c/d.

Wednesday: 75-90 minutes easy (4:30-4:50 pace) inc. hills/climbs

Thursday: as per Tuesday, OR 3 x (5 x 600 @2:00 w 90 sec rec.) w 3 min. rest between sets OR short speedwork (up to 400 reps) + w/u & c/d

Friday: as per Monday's gym session + 5/6 k tready @ 4:15-4:30 with hills/climbs

Saturday: as per Thursday, OR easy 40 minutes OR Monday's GYM if before a race.

Sunday: long run 2.5 hours plus (incorporating hills/climbs) plus a massage during the day OR race + massage during day.

So that's me and my pal "running"
Revised running goals...

keep under my age for 10K

crack 16:50 for 5K (close! 16:55 6/2/10)

crack 78 for the half...

back under 2:50 for 42.2K

What's your running history?

I was a sprinter during school and with Oakleigh and Ringwood Athletic clubs - so am by no means a "natural" distance runner. 'Retired' from competitive running in the late 80's whilst the kids were growing up and work got in the way. Ran on and off during the 90's. Began running in fun runs in 2001 and have been training and racing -in between injuries- ever since

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I enjoy 5 and 10k the most.

Why do you run?

Because I can! The days of running PB's are long behind me now so I run primarily to stay fit and healthy.

How did you find the forum?

I think I just found it by chance whilst surfing.

What's your number 1 running goal?

To be - and remain- injury free.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

It would best be described as "light on" and Slow!!!.

Currently running 3 days a week (25 - 30k) and 3 days weights in the gym. Slowly getting back into it after an ankle injury has robbed me the best part of 12 months.
In the middle of nowhere - near the end of the line..................

This is really interesting.

What's your running history?

I was pretty good at cross country in primary school although I didn't like it. When I started secondary school I ran 3 or 4km once or twice a week very inconsistently to keep in shape.

When I was 15 (in 2006) I decided one day to run from my house to the city (about 14km) although I didn't think I'd run the whole way. I did run the whole way and even ran back to Burnley station - another 2-3km. I then started entering races, first the Mother's Day Classic 4km, then Run to the G 10km. I did my first HM at 16 and then joined Richmond (thanks to TB).

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I like the HM coz it's a challenge. I probably do 6 or 8km most - I like the 6kms at Coburg coz they're nice and fast.

Why do you run?

I enjoy it and I enjoy improving and seeing my times falling. I like being fit and shocking my friends with how far I run. I'm a maths nerd and the statistics keep me running!

How did you find the forum?

From the link on Ausrun I think.

What's your number 1 running goal?

I guess to run a marathon at some stage (people keep asking me if I'll do it this year - I think no!). At the moment I'd like to get 10km under 40 minutes and half marathon under 90 minutes.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Sunday - long 12-15km

Monday - rest

Tuesday - running club at school 3-4km

Wednesday - R4TK speedwork!

Thursday - easy 8-12km

Friday - sometimes running club 3-4km

Saturday - R4TK 6km

30-35km per week.

What's your running history? Played Lacrosse and Tennis when younger as well as Football (the only real sort Aussie Rules) at school. When i moved schools at the end of Form 2 had to give up Lacrosse (i'm not sure i was that good at it but certainly had been in premiership teams) as sport was Saturday.

Was a decent tennis player but had a shocking temperament (this was the time of Ilie Nastase and John McEnroe think i watched them too much) and a reasonable footballer but really didn't have the build for it (was as scrawny then as i am now). The important thing for footy training was we were told for footy training we had to run 20K's per week this was the beginning of my running career as i would do this all in one go on a Sunday (don't quite think that was the idea).

Also did alot of bushwalking and me and two others were very fast walkers so essentially this was the beginning of my trail ultras.

Did the odd fun run, but back in 1985 the Melbourne Marathon went straight past my front yard and i said to myself i'll do that next year. And so i did, my first Melbourne Marathon in 1986 in 3:51 (as far as i'm concerned it was my first official marathon but as i threw my t-shirt with number off before the end - i knew nothing about chafing then - i've never got an official result. I swore it would be my first and last but the next year i was at it again and eventually in my 10th Marathon in 1991 i finally broke the 3 Hour Barrier.

From then on i got a little more serious and shortly after ran my first Ultra Marathon, Bogong to Hotham. Moved to Sydney around that time and learnt alot from running with the Sydney Striders, to the point now that i have run 133 Marathons and 192 Ultra Marathons.

I'd be honest and say i must have an addictive, obsessive personality i can't do anything by halves as the above proves, but i guess as addictions go it's much healthier than alcohol (i've well and truly been down that path at times and still do have the ocassional "issue") and punting and other things i've done over the years .

Certainly have a few other obsessions, Richmond Football Club (more like a masochistic obsession in recent times but i'll be a Tiger to the day i die as my father was) and The Rolling Stones (i've discovered over the years the only way i get the same buzz as i do from a race is with live music).

Anyone who has read my blog www.aussierunner-the-sequel.blogspot.com will realise that music is also a big obsession (shame the youtube video on my latest post only has me "head banging" i'm noted more for energetic workout style dance moves !!).

Favourite distances and/or disciplines: Ultra Marathons, too much pressure in Marathons nowadays to get sub 3 so i don't enjoy them as much as i used to, also used to love Half Marathons but nowadays struggle to keep up with the leaders early on so have to run totally differently tactically so again don't enjoy as much.

Do a 10K race every 7 years or so as simply it's just not my thing (and even 20 years back really wasn't always needed to settle first then push out the running).

In recent times have found that Multi Day Stage Ultras provide not only a physical but a mental challenge and also a great way to see the world, certainly my main aim for 2009 is to get a start in the Melbourne to Brisbane Race in October/November http://www.theultra.com.au/blog2/

Why do you run? To some degree it's an addiction, but certainly as Ultra Runners are like a big happy family most times so there is a great comradeship.

Training is something i do to make the racing easier but basically nothing (bar occasionally a real good gig  ) beats the adrenaline rush of a race.

How did you find the forum? I knew some of the Coolrunning Ausrunners !!, always happy to share some of my questionable wisdom !!!, lurked for quite a while as i really felt like i was doubling up with the other website but felt that sometimes there were things worth posting about.

Goals for 2008:

First to race better, have had some pretty ordinary results ever since Deutschlandlauf last year as well as 2007 being the first year i've really had injuries and illness holding me back

Then the races:

Badwater www.badwater.com

July 135 Miles across Death Valley to Mt Whitney USA

Trans Gaule http://www.yanoo.net/index.php4?cat=12&id=272

August 1,150 KM across France (looking to improve 10 Hours on 2006 time)

and possibly

Deutschlandlauf http://www.deutschlandlauf.org/index.php?section=DL2008

September 1,205 KM across Germany (looking to be first to complete TG/DL Double)

The first two i've already entered (and been accepted), so really now it's all up to me.

What does your training schedule and pace look like right now?

Try to run 2 to 2.5 Hours at least 4 times a week (which gives me 24 to 30K's), will sometimes do a 1K hill rep 10 times instead of one of those long runs but really depends on my state of mind.

Try to find a race of at least a half marathon each weekend if possible, otherwise will run with the Gold Coast Roadrunners (15K) on the Sunday basically with a 6K run there and back to keep the mileage up.

Sometimes i wonder, at age 43, whether i'll still be out there and as keen when i'm older i guess the answer is i will be if i still get the same "buzz" out of racing i always get the feeling i'll know when it's my time to finish (obviously that'll mean i'll have to spend more time watching the Tigers and going to gigs :D ),

What's your running history?

I used to walk everywhere. To school, the shops, gymnastics, and friends houses. Walking 5-10km was an everyday occurrence.

For cross country at school, they used to make us run laps of a 1km course at school. Deathly boring, and really hard. There was no encouraged method or strategy of improvement (C25K could really do some magic in school PE programs). So I struggled to run continuously.

One day in year 11 (five years ago?!), walking just seemed too slow. So I started to run. Bits and pieces. I remember the first time I ran the whole way, including up that nasty hill, of the loop I'd been trying to run.

Ever since then I've been on/off with running for periods of time. I have to combine running with gymnastics, trampoline, and then coaching, as well as school. Definitely not a morning runner, I really loved running at night. The beautiful clear skies and crispness, ah, magic. I'd have dinner and then go for a run, 4/5 nights a week.

Favourite distances and/or disciplines:

I just enjoy being able to run effortlessly for extended periods of time...the whole "I'm doing something that other people can't do!" thing !? :D

Why do you run?

Great fitness (REALLY helps with mainting intensity at trampoline), great for your legs (shape, strength, ligaments, plyometrics), down time, refreshing, getting outside, doing something others can't do, get to see new things, to share a common bond, to learn how to perservere, to push yourself beyond what you think you're capable of, hmm, oh, and definitely bragging rights when you've just run 8ks to someone's house and you turn up barely red.

How did you find the forum?

I think a RW magazine.

What's your number 1 running goal?

I'd really, really love to run a HM, and I do have a "dream" goal time of 1:20. Now, that's where the distinction between realistic dreams and dreaming dreams comes in :D

What does your training schedule and pace look like now?

Currently I've run maybe five times in the last month...I find it very hard to fit running in with training, and I'm always so sore (or tired or hungry). Plus where I live is unsuitable to run, so I have to drive elsewhere.

However:

Monday - training 2hours+strength

Tuesday - either a gym class (pilates or aqua aerobics), a run if I can, double mini training + strength at the gym

Wednesday - training 2hours + strength

Thursday - rest

Friday - training 2 hours+ strength

Saturday - run am, weights + cardio

Sunday - cardio at gym + strength

I can run 4:30s if I want to (but not continuously!) but generally run at 5.30-6min kms.

p.s. Clarkey I thought it might be a good idea if you're related to anyone else on the board to maybe add that too?

Of course anyone can add more info if they choose (or leave out details they would prefer not to share...), its all about creating a 'guestbook' so any newbies can get an idea of what makes us tick.

Hopefully one day we will get someone posting here as their first post. That would be cool.
