Shoes + Lifespans?

Postby Rowey » Fri Jun 04, 2010 8:28 pm

Hey there

Do you notice an age span of your running shoes? They start off new and plush and then get dirty and stretch a bit...over time the upper gets more accustomed to your foot shape and after a while they are sooooooo comfortable. And then you enjoy the prime of the shoe lifespan.
My main pair (airmax09) are like that at the moment- a bit tatty to look at but v v comfy. Like a natural extension of your foot.
In a month or two (at the current rate) I know they will start to enter "old age".

Is it like this with your shoes? ( or are you one of those lucky biomechanically blessed bastards who enjoy plush comfort at all times? :) ...........)

cheers

I am there right now with one pair. I have just purchased the next pair and I am alternating so that I can keep my first pair for as long as possible. I don't want to let them go :)

Totally agree Rowey, I think that time when the shoes are 'worn in' and looking like they like are a few months old and feel great, that is the time to start trolling for a new pair!

Hello folks

I'm on my 4th pair of Newtons.
I got 993km from my last pair!!! The were with me for a while.
I have not seen anything about Newtons in the mags, but over the 3 years I've been running in them I've seen a lot more pairs about...
Anyone else using them?

thanks
Graham

I find that when i start to get the feel of shin splits in both legs, then check the mileage, always 850ish, then its time to demote these one's to the gardening pile. I feel sorry for those that run around the 100km per week, to think that you are replacing $200 plus shoes every 8 to 9 weeks. For me, 2 pairs on rotation (one for short runs and one for long runs) it's only every 6 months.

My podiatrist advised that running shoes should be replaced after 800 to 900km. A good tip he gave me is to shop at discount sports outlets, like the ones found at DFO or if you know your size, order them online from overseas shops. The runners are last seasons so that’s why they are heavily reduced. I rarely pay more than $100 for runners. If I had purchased them when they were 1st released they would have cost more than $200.

Before removing shoes from the rotation totally, if you are running trails regularly you can extend the life of any shoe, or if they only ever get used on trails I would expect them to last well over 1000km.
Due to lots of roatations and trail running, I have several pairs with some life still in them and over 1200km in them.

Trail running is less repetitive and generally a softer surface so shoes / feet / legs all get an easier ride!!
42.2km is just the warm-up
