RW & S2F sightings

Postby Stu Mac » Thu May 26, 2005 11:33 am

Whilst no uniform is worn by this select few, a few of us have started to recognise each other and I think on sightings it could be cool to list the known sightings. This may be harder for the non Victorians (due to lesser numbers), we can only but start somewhere.

Yesterday at the Tan, a big event was put on by one of the Running Groups, the Melbourne Midday Milers (MMM), without knowing all of the details, the plan was for the MMM & a team from NAB to race relay style around the Tan is see if they could get close to Craig Mottram's great 10:12.

Due to work I missed this great race and watching the MMM #1 team move around in 10:10, NAM 10:36 & MMM #2 10:40

Now where am I going with this you are asking, well, one very prominent MMM who also is an forum poster was running the first 500m leg (actually against my uncle, who is an irregular poster on CR), so I thought I would post a sighting of Old Miler and also a link to a photo, I'll leave it to OM or your imagination who is who

No sightings here.....but a small tip.

Most fridays in the city - 7am start - either on the river or heading back to Princess Park, other locales might include Fitzroy Gardens, Tan, Birrarung Marr, Southbank, Docklands.

Usually 3 of us running at about 4.30-4.40 pace

Other than that, just about anywhere in and around Chirnside Park/ Lilydale Lake/Mooroolbark - but could be anytime...

SM - a quick Q about the Tan, the runners were on the outside track, is this the one that the distance is measured on?

Stu,

Thanks for publicly outing my shameful performance in yesterday's record breaking run around the Tan. It's amazing that it took seven of us (who are rather fit) to match Mottram's time. Unfortunately my 79sec 500m split just couldn't match Gary O's 78.

I've now re-challenged your uncle (the one in the Vic Vets uniform) to a rematch on Saturday at Sandown, then a head to head at the MCG next year at the Victorian Over 40 800m title. I've got 9 months to rediscover some fast twitch fibres!

BTW - we were up against our old foes from the ANZ (not NAB)who ended up so short of real employees to call on that they dragged in anyone who had walked past one of their branches to compete!

I'm not entirely sure, the markings appear to work both ways. I always run the inside track after Anderson as it is wider and therefore giving you more room to move taking into account 'joe public'.

I think the Corporate Cup use the inside, I'm sure OM would know.

I've been running the Tan for so long that I predate the 'inside track'!

As a traditionalist, I prefer to run on the outside track even if it means dodging more pedestrians, pushers or dogs or jumping up and over tree roots. I think you'll find that most Corporate Cup racers do the same, even venturing out onto the road where the track gets congested just before the Observatory.

Also, there are two sections of 'inside' and 'outside' track. The first is at the back of the course running parallel to Domain Road. My experience is that it's quicker to run on the outside as the inside path has a considerable dip which you have to dig yourself out of. The second starts at the Shrine and there is no real advantage taking either path.... in fact it's not uncommon for people racing the Tan to switch these paths midway through.

Silly ANZ people should have NABbed super coach Brian Delaney from their Esanda offshoot. He would have gone about 80 seconds for the 500

I see Gary O in that picture. Great to see he is out running again and strongly too. Stu Mac, I can assume he well over those niggles he copped during the Summer season?

And what's Little Mac looking to run tomorrow?

jegster, yes Gary has been going well and has competed in both races so far, he is hoping to run around 38 min this weekend at Sandown.

Cameron ran last weekend and ran fairly ordinary, last year he ran 36:50 and that was with stopping to tie his shoes twice, his coach reckons he may be in similar form, so we will have to wait and see, but I would be very surprised if he gets much under 37. But young Luke, same age & you followed him in a 5000m, he is hoping to go sub 35, he is running well!

OLD MILER QUOTED : I've got 9 months to rediscover some fast twitch fibres!

Completely unrelated to the thread guys but this line from the venerable one made me think.

I've been running for 8 months now and have built up to 80kms a week with a longest run (this morning) of 36 kms.

I used to be handy at squash some time ago and was playing my brother for the 1st time in some months and noticed that while I didn't really get puffed (I have NEVER been close to this fit!) I didn't seem to have any real speed off the mark. I felt "slower" than I used to.

As you become more and more used to building endurance, do you lose the fast twitch stuff? As you are able to run further, do you, by necessity, run slower?

Schtumpy,

I don't think it's a matter of losing the fast twitch fibres, it's just the recruitment and use that changes with training.

Faster work (which is what I'm lacking) will promote the recruitment of the fast twitches, which are then used when running at higher intensity.

If you can lay your hands on Noakes' "Lore of Running" you can read all about it.

Sighting Sunday AM..... Maintgonoon Road above the Fraser National Park (Lake Eildon). Journeyman and Old Miler chewing the fat on a 25km 2hr run.

One of OM's rave runs, just too bad the warm June weather meant there was no low lying cloud to test out Journeyman's special glasses

Split for the 6km(ish) hill climb 33min. Split for the descent 27min

....well if you stopped hiding in the forest and frolicking with the wild life, and started slumming it in the dirty 'burbs like the rest of us - then a L sighting might be on the cards..... :P

I saw Michelled on Sunday morning.....but then she was running next to me :D

And we ran 19.6km too - that's the furthest I've run so far.

Thanks to Mickatie for the tip about the Dandenong Creek Trail. What a great scenic place to run :)
